Here we go then, please try to follow along, please put your seats upright and put your tray tables up and in locked position. Are we ready? Lets begin:
The Sun started as a recording project when Chris Burney was on the road with Tim Easton in 2001, who after much nagging, allowed (aloud?) Chris to play a bit of stand-up bass next to him. Columbus, Ohio was the place where this mess originally started however weeks were spent in Chicago at Leroy Bachs’ loft recording and making merry. Music is a language we can speak when we want to express our love. This is where it gets weird because the vultures appeared to feast on the remains of dreams broken, but that’s a bit dramatic and we wouldn’t be anywhere without our friends. Chris moved to LA and began the assimilation process into the Machine. Managers were met, demos passed around. Interest from long-haired, bright-eyed simple musicians from the Midwest was at its peek due to perceived business triumphs of Other Bands You May Have Heard Of. Smelling the green blood fuming from the pits crotch, Chris struck up his band.
The only drummer Chris ever loved was Sam Brown who was playing in The New Bomb Turks at the time. It was he who brought the punk skills to these country and blues pills and the excitement that can only be called rock and roll broke on the horizon. Bassist Brad Forsblom and guitarist Bryan Ardnet were flown-in but where did they come from and how did they get to be so bad…ass? They obviously garnered their skills in the streets, fighting villainy with their teeth cut on the beef made mad by their mad chops that could only be learned in the melting pot of stew named Columbus oh. Oh and now we are full circle. They can play and they can comprehend, they can think for themselves and therefore dangerous. After three hours as a band, The Sun were signed. Blood, spit on the palm kind of sex, and a taste of fear fueled a hazy first year tour for the LOVE AND DEATH EP in 2002.
Recording was started for a full-length on November 3, 2004. Ben Hillier (Blur, Doves, Elbow) appeared as a sane saint savior for The Sun. Ben’s British sensibilities deeply affected The Sun’s outlook on music. John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Blood Brothers, Hot Hot Heat) was also called upon to produce some of the sessions.
The war was in full swing, lovers were dropping like flies over the fumes of tainted words, and the snow was falling in upstate New York. Spring came just in time to save lives of The Sun. A new member was added in the form of multi-instrumentalist Brad Caulkins. Some of the resultant tracks made their way onto their 2nd EP called DID YOUR MOTHER TELL YOU?
The system gathered strength. A year and a half past the beginning of the end and we’re just getting our heads around what we have done. To quote The Beatles, HELP!
A friend recently told me at a Sabbath dinner to “blame it on the youth”. So I’ll try. Lord, I’ll try. To say goodbye, to yesterday. Thank You for listening.
