Once again, Eidos’ enters the mind of the Hitman, a silent assassin who is desperately trying to overcome his past and discover his true identity. It’s a cold, cruel, heartless profession and Hitman2 violently brings the despicable world of the professional assassin to brutal life. This graphically enhanced action adventure game offers an intense experience clearly aimed for adults, with its tricky, action packed missions. To be successful at this game one must utilize stealth, tactical and survival instincts to complete these missions.

Imagine a world filled with hiding, sneaking, and eluding someone at every corner and you may get an indication of the game-play within. In Hitman2 you assume the role of agent 47, a genetically enhanced assassin, created to eliminate undesirables with maximum efficiency. When your only friend, a priest, is abducted, agent 47 sets out on a rescue mission that will span 21 levels and extend across a variety of exotic locations. A few of those enticing locales include Sicily, St. Petersburg, Japan, Malaysia, and India.

Throughout the game agent 47 encounters hordes of ruthless crime bosses, including slick Italian mobsters, fierce Afghan warriors, cold-blooded Japanese killers, and many more. As a professional Hitman, you have access to a slew of deadly weapons including knives, handguns, rifles, and explosives, grenades and many more lethal options. Also offered are non-lethal weapons such as chloroform, poison darts, and stun guns, thus the games subtitle “silent assassin.” Once you successfully complete a mission you are awarded a rating on how you performed, with highest marks awarded for silent kills and no innocent civilian deaths. This is where one must combine stealth, sneaking and sniping together as the core essential elements to survival.

Technically you can run up to a bunch of enemies and start shooting and may be lucky enough to even make it out alive, but that’ll just alert the other enemies of your presence. They will then be more cautious of being hit and less likely to let you sneak by them unscathed. Plus getting into gunfights could hinder your main objectives. Of course also the reward of adding a new weapon to your inventory may curb your desire to run around like a maniac with a rifle and an empty prescription of Xanax. One drawback for many, including myself is trying to set aside that desire to let the “loud killer” come out. This is very likely to happen early on in the game, when you’re still learning the basics and haven’t fully grasped the art of performing silent kills.

Graphically this game is beautiful and the high-resolution backgrounds have been thoughtfully recreated to accurately display an image of each city represented. The architecture in some levels is so accurate that the building design often removes the need for the specific country to be named in pre-mission briefings. Also being a fan gory imagery, Hitman2 depicts murder, spattered blood, bullet holes and corpses realistically enough to impress the mature audiences.

Fans of the Godfather or The Sopranos will undoubtedly be trilled by this gaming experience. However, you don’t have to be a Hitman/Mafia buff to enjoy this. Anyone could be easily won over by an appreciation for the polished story line, the marvelous soundtrack or the high quality game-play. Hitman2 is one tasty cultural feast with an amazing visual display and soundtrack to match. The game-play is definitely an acquired taste and those who prefer their shooters be fast-paced best take heed as a great deal of patience is required to get the best out of a this highly strategic game. The most essential component to the game is remembering brains rather than brute force is key.
