Ahab Rex Queen of Softcore EP
Lens Records
Remixes are a funny concept - the phrase “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind. In older times, remixes were seen as solely consigned to discos and dance halls, something indie kids would never partake in. But what with dance and rock intersecting now more than ever, and both established artists like Franz Ferdinand and newer groups like !Forward, Russia! embracing the remix ideal, it’s a great time to be on the dance floor.
Track listing:
01 The Queen of Softcore - Album Version
02 The Queen of Softcore - Ahab Rex Remix
03 The Queen of Softcore - Press Remix
04 The Queen of Softcore - The Countdown Remix
05 The Queen of Softcore - Nookleptia Remix
All four remixes on this EP treat “The Queen of Softcore” in different ways, though the original may be the strongest; its grimy, menacing Beck-like sound is nicely balanced with shoop-wop background vocals and a knowingly kitsch atmosphere. In terms of the remixes, Ahab Rex himself is clearly too enamored of his own track to change it, instead simply adding a backbeat and dirtying the general sound. The instrumental Press remix shows the slightly tired beat of the song with none of the cheekily morbid lyrics of the original. Instead The Countdown remix plays up the grungy, grim edge, ending up like Nine Inch Nails taking over the dance floor. Taking the song even further is the Nookleptia remix, which makes “The Queen of Softcore” almost unrecognizable, a noticeable weakness. Stick to the original, in this case, but the Countdown gives it a ghostly run for its money.
