Dévics Push the Heart
Reincarnate Music
Throughout Devic’s long career, they’ve managed to stay on the right side of shoegaze, which is equivalent to walking a razor-thin line. Shoegaze can so easily slide into the doldrums that those who excel in it are often worthy of applause. This album, unfortunately, is not. Instead it’s a slow and steady collection of 10 songs, all of which tend to blend into each other in a landscape of cold, steely appeal.
Track listing:
01 Lie to Me
02 Secret Message to You
03 Salty Seas
04 Song For a Sleeping Girl
05 Distant Radio
06 Just One Breath
07 Moments
08 If We Cannot See
09 City Lights
10 Come Up
Devics, consisting of singer Sara Love and instrumentalist Dustin O’Halloran, are able to reach moments of profound and haunting beauty, ironically, when they try something invigorating and exciting. “Just One Breath” gives new life to this otherwise stagnant album, and “Come Up” employs a sharp piano to cataclysmic effect. But elsewhere there’s nothing but the same dreamy nonchalance, vaguely reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins but lacking their transcendent elegance.
Overall, this album sorely needs a shot of adrenaline, if it wants to touch more than the ‘chilled out’ demographic.
