Edison Woods
Nest of Machines
|
Nest of Machines is the third album from Edison Woods, and much more clear and serious than the last two albums. The album features cover art by Oleg "CMART" Paschenko, that he says was painted with the blood of his soul, and the strong fragile ghost bird spirit is the timbre of Edison Woods. This album sports a highly unique sound, beautifully crafted by an all-star international mini-orchestra whose list of members reads like the guest speakers for an avant garde swing band convention. The line-up consists of Maxim Moston and Jeff Langston of Antony & The Johnsons, Oren Bloedow of Elysian Fields, Steve Ulrich of Big Lazy, David Berger of The Vanity Set, and Jason DiMatteo of Chocolate Genius, all blending perfectly with composer, pianist and vocalist, Julia Frodahl.

The overall feel of this album is very up-close and personal. It feels like sitting in a red velvet sofa in the black lodge with Julia Frodahl singing softly into your ear, so close, you can feel her breath, while the band plays, mute, and expressionless, so that the only comfortable way to listen is with your eyes closed. While having your eyes closed is not the only way you can listen to this album, it is certainly my preferred method for getting the most out of it. Nest of Machines is enthralling, like a soft, melancholy Vivaldi score enhanced by Julia Frodahl's mesmerizing voice and lyrics.
I was thoroughly impressed with this band, this album, and the surrealism of it all. Most of the time, when I hear avant garde, surreal, or neo-classical, it is usually promoting a gauche mash of strings, and plinking piano, accompanied by "try too hard" lyrics that make no sense, but this is genuine, and genuinely great. I highly recommend getting your hands on this album, putting it on, letting your body relax and your mind race.
