The Go! Team
Thunder, Lightning, Strike
Sony
It’s finally here. And yes ladies and gentlemen, everything your British and Japanese friends have been telling you is true. The freshman effort by England’s Go! Team is one of the best of 2005. Having been held up for a year, Thunder, Lightning, Strike has finally gotten its North American release (with a couple of extra tracks to boot) and it’s been worth the wait.

Track listing:

01 Panther Dash
02 Ladyflash
03 Feelgood By Numbers
04 The Power Is On
05 Get It Together
06 We Just Won't Be Defeated
07 Junior Kickstart
08 Air Raid GTR
09 Bottle Rocket
10 Friendship Update
11 Hold Yr Terror Close
12 Huddle Formation
13 Everyone's A VIP To Someone

You may never hear a happier or more uplifting album than this one. With its bright pianos and horns soaring over loops of big crunchy caffeine-driven beats, Thunder, Lightning, Strike is a showdown between pop, funk and hip hop held on the schoolyard – with a little bit of 1970’s detective show bravado thrown in on a couple of tracks (most notably, "Junior Kickstart" and "Friendship Update"). While most of the album is filled with sample-laden and downright joyous instrumentals, when the vocals do come in, they give the impression of compulsively cheering children. Like a game of Double Dutch or Stella Ella Ola. And somehow that works. The whole thing comes together in 13 ridiculously cheerful and danceable tracks that you can’t help but bop your head along to.

I dare you not to smile.
