Humble B
Imytl EP

Knowing that Humble B is from Reno, Nevada, I couldn’t help but think of television program Reno 911!. In many ways, this CD is much like the infamous Lt. Dangle’s short-shorts: khaki, brief, and not hiding anything you’d especially like to see.

Musically, opener “Imytl” (“If I missed ya, talk later”) has far too many 50s ooh-wahs, and not nearly enough edge. “Right About Something” sounds like a stripped-down Foo Fighters, but of course the best thing about Dave Grohl’s work is its giddy epicness. “California” rolls about like a loose tumbleweed, and is just as easily forgotten.

The biggest surprise here comes from “Gun Honey,” easily the most shockingly blatant rip-off of Wilco’s “Pot Kettle Black” ever created. Let’s just say that Jeff Tweedy isn’t shaking in his vintage cowboy boots. No, this is amiable roots-rock, with nothing especially unusual or interesting - except, of course, catalyzing a rousing game of “spot the Wilco.” Humble B, you have the right (and our pleas) to remain silent.
