Jim Noir Tower of Love
Barsuk
A lot of bands have been compared to the Beatles over the years (a lot, a lot), but few have deserved the comparison as much as Jim Noir. Tower of Love, the debut full-length from the bowler-clad British tunesmith, collects the finest tracks from his first three EPs into a package of catchy, innocent, pop songs that echo the sound and spirit of the Revolver-era Beatles’ lighter side. A track like “I’m Only Sleeping” or “Good Day Sunshine” would seem perfectly at home nestled in among Noir’s creations, while the similarities between his “Tell Me What To Do” and Revolver’s “Doctor Robert” are hard to miss.

That’s not to say that Tower of Love is a mindless regurgitation of the Fab Four. Noir’s sound clearly owes a nearly equal debt to other pop bands of the sixties – not to mention a few of his contemporary Brits. It’s impossible to miss the Pet Sounds influence on the instrumental title-track, just as it is hard not to hear a little Boy Least Likely To in “Eanie Meany”, the kind of whimsical childsong you’d expect to find on The Best Party Ever. The Zombies, the Association, the Beta Band; they’re all there.
What separates Jim Noir from the rest of the sixties-style pop pack is that he has managed to do more than simply distil those influences down into a couple of great songs. There are twelve. Tower of Love is one of those remarkable, rare albums that is filled to the brim with excellent tracks. The choice of which are the greatest is a matter of personal opinion, rather than common sense. What is certain is that there’s not a single song here you’re going to want to skip. In Jim Noir’s world, every chorus is catchy and every song’s a single.
