In which we hear nothing especially new. Julia Lau is yet another in the ranks of amiable singer-songwriters - think Norah Jones or Dido or Michelle Branch or…actually, didn’t this whole trend finish about 2 years ago? Look, girls with guitars, especially when addressing the facets of human weakness, are always intriguing, but like all the others Julia Lau has nothing really to add.

Her songs are genuine and sincere, but permanently personal and, for someone acclaimed as “multicultural” and influenced by “roots, rock and soul,” surprisingly lacking in adventure or variety. While “Clay” shows off Lau’s admittedly impressive vocals, and “All I Have” actually manages to work up a vague groove, the majority of this CD is overpowered by folk-lite songs like “This Bridge Called My Back,” “The Sun Sets” and “Look Into Her.”
