The Keep Aways
S/T
Chairkickers Music
Groundbreaking old school rock, livid guitarwork and punk-style drumming combine with streaming, ravaged vocals that closely shadow Courtney Love and Brody Dalle (The Distillers) in The Keep Aways’ self-titled debut (Chairkickers Union Music). Think ‘Jennifer’s Body’ meets ‘City Of Angels’, but extremely aggravated and harder.

Track listing:

01 File It Away
02 Bleeding Heart
03 Standards
04 Conversational Crime
05 Hey Song
06 Saturday
07 Same Difference

The furious vocals -- along with equally angry music -- are joined by rolling drumlines and chord progressions like you haven’t heard in years. In ‘Bleeding Heart’ alone, one lyrical line and it’s clear that grunge has been resurrected from the remains of Kurt Cobain, along with a lasting promise that its on the rise once more.

The Keep Aways pick up grunge where Nirvana left off, especially in ‘Conversational Crime’. The band has merely taken Cobain’s to-do list and rehashed it, as well as replacing three men with three women of Duluth, Minnesota -- Mindy Johnson (vocals, guitar), Nikki Moeller (bass) and Shanna Willie (drums).

The debut is full of racing hooks, pogo riffs and music to make you doubt the ability of soundproof walls. It’s indignant and outstanding; these girls are making quick headway, breaking down your pop music barriers and blasting intensity through your stereo. Welcome them with open arms, and a limber body ready to mosh.

Skeptics should listen to ‘Same Difference’, which comes with an ear-splitting mini-solo, and achy vocals, which, by this time, have become worn-out, as if the entire album was recorded in one setting. This sound is raw, and that’s what sets this band apart from the others. They’re determined and unrelenting.

And with that, the 17-minute album comes to a close. More than enough is jam-packed here, and although a short cd, you had better play it! otherwise, fear that Johnson may come and kick your ass.
