Kim Taylor
I Feel like a Fading Light

While doing research on Kim Taylor, I’ve seen her music classified as jazz, folk, pop, and even lounge. I would classify it as good; if I had to give an original name, I would call it "new standard" or "standard nouveau." This album’s namesake song "I Feel like a Fading Light" reminds me of "Alright" by Supergrass. At least, in sound and bounce, but the sound is a little more resounding, touching, and haunting. Where Supergrass makes me want to drink beer and throw eggs, Kim Taylor stirs my emotions. I feel like I need to rewind certain passages in the song to review, because I know I heard something important, it just took my brain a little too long to recognize it.

When the album gets to "When My Dress Is Hung," you are put at ease, and lulled into a happy trance by a Woody Guthrie-like tune, only to be pulled back into a sobering story by "Ninety-five Things."

Each of these songs is touching, and Kim has a way of telling a story that makes it seem as if you are there. The way that she sings either makes your pulse race or slows it to a relaxing pace depending on how she uses her heavenly voice. She has been compared to Cat Power, but I find her to be more powerful, not necessarily better; similar but different. Kim is already an accomplished musician. She has opened for the likes of Aqualung, Ben Lee, Ollabelle, Maria Muldaur, and many more.

Kim Taylor is a great songwriter, who can put together songs that move you, as well as songs that inspire you. She was born and raised in Florida. She is a songwriter, singer, background singer, guitar player, piano player, flutist, café owner, whiskey drinker, teacher, parent, gardener, book reader, and poetry lover. That’s what her press release said, but all I saw was "whiskey drinker, book reader, and poetry lover," and I was impressed. It shows in her songwriting ability and her ability to move you, both mentally, and physically. Kim currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Look for her to make it big, and tour the entire U.S. in 2007.
