Leigh Nash Blue on Blue
Nettwerk Records
Our society is currently in the grip of post-post-irony, wherein we can only digest our cultural past when smirkingly recreated complete with a sardonic quip from Michael Ian Black – so let’s get right down to it. Remember the 90s? Remember Sixpence None the Richer? No? Remember “Kiss Me” Or “There She Goes”? Thinking that maybe it was time for a resurgence of inoffensive Christian pop-rock?

Us neither. And this debut solo album from SNTR’s frontwoman provides little of interest. True, there’s some engaging pop tunes in the Michelle Branch vein here – “Dawn” especially – but the vast majority is forgettable, featherweight pop with asinine lyrics like “In heaven, love lasts forever” (“My Idea of Heaven”). Maybe 10 years ago this album might’ve flown, but it just sounds like an artist missing the boat and frantically signaling from the pier. Besides, haven’t you heard? Haven’t you heard? We like our girls in blue tights and polka-dot dresses now, darling, and the Long Blondes or Pipettes would blow this girl out of the water.
