Mew
The Zookeeper’s Boy EP
Sony Bmg

For a long time, Mew have been a collection of almost-rans. After nearly 10 years and 3 space-pop pieces, they still have neither the credibility nor the renown that they deserve. Instead, they’re often pegged as lesser Danish pop, the band critics may applaud but the masses deride. Or rather, would deride if they were aware of said band’s existence.

Track listing:

01 Zookeeper's Boy (Radio Edit)
02 Dark Design (Red Version)
03 Chinaberry Tree (Red Version)
04 Safe As Houses
05 Zookeeper's Boy (Sasha Remix)

But now, and call it idle dreaming if you must, things might be ready to change. This EP showcases tracks for future LP And the Glass Handed Kites, two of which were featured on 2000’s limited release Half the World is Watching Me. But even if you sold your grandma to snatch that album, this EP is still a necessary buy and a tantalizing promise of things to come.

Like Sigur Ros on acid, Mew take icy Scandinavian landscapes and imbue them with a glorious, emphatic sensibility – the ice is melting and the grass is peaking out from under the snow. Every one of these tracks is majestic, massive and, most importantly, alive; gone are the slightly tuneless barrages of sound this band was once know for.

“Indifference is killing me!” Jonas Bjerre yelps out on “Am I Wry? No,” in a sound of pure desperation. Mew may not be heroes yet, but their time has come.
