Parks And Recreation
What Was She Doing on the Shore That Night?
Hush Records

Arising from the ashes of little-known indie group Reclinerland, Parks and Recreation have just released… a decent debut. The opening track talks about stargazing while sounding like shoegazing, but luckily the momentum picks up from there. Ironically, for a band that prides itself so much on its lyrics, the strength of Parks and Recreation lies in its musicianship. Occasionally this debut has the charm of the Decemberists or Belle & Sebastian, but it can’t sustain those comparisons with this catchy but ultimately unsatisfying collection.

Track listing:

01 What Was She Doing On The Shore That Night?
02 The Perfect Love
03 Break Into Song!
04 La La La La La
05 Maybe The Moon Knows Something
06 Danny Built His House All Spiral
07 I Tried To Date The Singer In A Band
08 Flat On Her Back
09 A Northwest Wind

The problem is that the lyrics are nowhere near as clever as believed, and sometimes wincingly awful (“Lie back/ I’ll use my finger”). And even if “The Perfect Love” does sound a hell of a lot like Pulp, its lyrics don’t even approach Jarvis Cocker’s witty depictions of modern life – can you imagine that band of misfits ever recording a line like “you can find me on aol / IM me / Hey Star69Gurl. / This is WellHungStd32”?
