The Perishers
Sway
From soon-to-be-released Let There Be Morning comes The Perishers' EP, Sway (Nettwerk, 2005). The foursome, which resides in Umeå, Sweden, have been playing together since 1997. They are: Ola Klüft (vocals/guitar), Martin Gustafson (keyboards/backing vocals), Pehr Åström (bass), and Thomas Hedlund (drums). It’s justified to say the band resembles Keane, as they are noted as a musical influence to the Swedish group, but The Perishers allude to Travis as well.

Track listing:

01 Sway 02 My Heart
03 Trouble Sleeping
04 When I Wake Up Tomorrow
05 All Wrong

The beginning title track has a hint of Coldplay, and has that potential to be a great hit here someday, as it already has lead to a growing fanbase overseas.

The beauty of this band continues on in "My Heart" with a casual, put-your-feet-up-and-relax setting. Try to ignore the synthesizer vocals in the background-- they just don’t suit the feeling that the band seems to be going for in this track. Nevertheless, it doesn’t take too much away from the elegance displayed in it.

"Trouble Sleeping" literally sounds like Klüft rolled out of bed to serenade his lover. His voice is a bit disheveled, but once they are given the chance to awaken, they can only improve. There’s some Starsailor here, but without James Walsh’s wailing.

In the fourth track, "When I Wake Up Tomorrow," it seems to be almost on target to a slow-step ballad off of Jet’s album. It’s gentle, and lyrically a great piece about looking forward to the next day and moving on in life. "All Wrong" closes the EP, and looking it all over once more, carries a Travis setup. True-to-life lyrics and an up tempo build make this song very down-to-earth, but these last two tracks are only included on the EP itself. Who knows when they’ll surface again, but they may possibly be set aside for Album #3.

The Perisher’s are a laid-back band with resonating vocals and the remarkable lyrics that made Coldplay and Travis so critically acclaimed. Now it’s time to wait and see...
