Sonic Youth
Rather Ripped
Geffen Records

In Rather Ripped, there are hints of the good old days of the Sonic Death, and EVOL period in songs like "Rats" and "Sleepin' Around." These nuggets are surrounded by good pop songs delivered in an atypical Sonic Youth style. It seems like the entire group was running on all cylinders this time. If Sonic Youth ever deserved widespread airplay and accolades for an album, it is this one. This album makes me feel bad for writing them off in the 90's. Kim Gordon has gotten better with age and Thurston Moore become more focused and sharpened his teeth, because even though these songs sound "poppy" the message seems deeper than before; maybe it is because the pop sound makes it seem more subversive. This album sounds like the members are finally working together rather than trying to outdo each other.

This is the kind of album The Smashing Pumpkins would like to have done; dirty pop that does not come off as whiny (and i do like the early Smashing Pumpkins).

I could go on and on about the nuances of each sound, but the bottom line is, this album is better than Goo, Washing Machine, and Sonic Nurse. END.
