Sunshine
Moonshower and Razorblades
Custard Records
Just as the title suggests something beautiful and another with an edge, Sunshine puts on a show of their own. Moonshower and Razorblades (Custard Records, 2005) is a refined blend of technofied rampage rock with a gentler backdrop.

Victimisanothernameforlover

The album starts off on a roll with "What You've Got"-- lead vocalist Kay's voice seems to tread upon Bono's breathiness, but with a sinister glare peering through. Pumping drums and thrashing guitars are intense and direct, along with the fuzz box effect on Kay to complete it. The band, who reign from Tabor, Czech Republic, have been together since 1994. Although their lineup is different now -- Kay (guitar, vocals), Daniel (drums), Amak (bass) and Jiri (guitar) -- their musical focus hasn't altered in the least.

Compact track "Victimisanothernameforlover" is equally as enjoyable with synthesizer vocal techniques, and a punk/techno sound akin to Duran Duran's Electric Barbarella, with on-point relentless drumming. Throughout the rest of the album, there is a fair dose of slide guitar, and on the opposite end, ripping guitar riffs. Kay appears as Gary Numan on occasion, but there are also effects of Joy Division, Postal Service, and exclusively musically, Placebo.

About halfway through the record, Sunshine's hold seems to lessen and taper off, as they soften up a bit. Guitar solos thrive amongst Interpol droning ("Victoria's Secret Blackmail") and a darker tone that brings forth a sense of forbiddenness straight out of Black Market Music ("Miss Kkarma Kkoma").

Moonshower and Razorblades walks the fine line of leaning towards both crazed manic singing and a gentler dancebeat afterthought. Electrified, intricate and occasionally submissive, this is a record worth getting your hands on.
