This is beautiful. Upon her first note, I am drawn to the lead singer’s
voice immediately. She appears as a collage of femininity, but most
forthcoming seem to be the vocal similarities to Gwen Stefani’s warble
and
an elevated, more broadened PJ Harvey. To be honest, in the entire
first
track, called ‘The Falling Kind’, I never heard the music at all. I was
completely taken by the singing, and so it was all I heard.

The band is called Veda and they’re from Kansas City, Missouri. The EP,
This
Broken City, is out of Second Nature Recordings, and the album is
expected
to drop sometime this summer. I already anticipate it. Actually, I hope
it
comes out sooner. It would be perfect to start the summer off with.
There aren’t too many bands out there with a female lead, but that all
ends
here. Kristen May (vocals, guitar), Jason Douglas (bass) and Brian
(guitars)
and Drew Little (drums) make up the group, which formed two years ago.
As I become more attentive this time around, I focus on the music for
the
second track, ‘Moments Rewound’. It gives me chills, real ones, as well
as
mental ones because I’m reminded of so many things and I’m thrown
backwards
into my own memories, visions of the past. It’s after thinking this
that I
see the track’s title correlates with my experience.
‘Safe’ has darkened guitars and rhythmic drumming that seems to spin in
circles. There’s such a musical mixture that it becomes a highly
concentrated track where everything is all full throttle.
Then May’s voice hits me somewhere unbeknownst to me, undetected in
‘Still
Standing’, and when it happens it brings out feelings that seem so long
ago
felt. Something has been freed.
The last track on the EP, ‘Your God, Your Country’, has this build-up
beauty
that comes crashing down delicately upon the ears. All five of these
tracks
show that Veda is an emotional, spiritual band -- they invoke your
innermost
feelings while serenading you with their sentimental music and
unparalleled
vocals.
Keep a close eye on this group, and watch for their album release. It’s
going to do wonders. They’ve got stardom written all over them.
