Vedette is a duo from Salem, Massachusetts boasting a specialty in experimental, dirty hip-hop. The duo is Neil Carlill and Manuel Stagars; the sound is whirring, humming, buzzing, beeping, and pounding. The obtuse lyricism of Neil Carlill is somewhat reminiscent of the Low-Fidelity All-Stars, with an artsy mystery film feel to it. In fact, the whole album makes you feel as if you are in a dream, and the music puts your mind in a receptive state to absorb every lyric and let them dissolve like hard candy in your brain. This music is way too cerebral to dance to. Actually, this music is best listened to through headphones, in order to soak in every tiny transition, lyrical loop, and overdub more clearly. All of the nuances are worth hearing, because they all add to the songs. I have listened to this album several times, and every time I heard something new that added to the song. The “noise” generated in each song is complimentary to the song title, such as the sound of a gear or something going around and around in "Martian Corn Circle." The sounds create the perfect atmosphere for each and every song. The songs are like poems, in that most of them start and when they are finished they just stop. No winding down, or slowly going away, they just stop. It kind of jolts your brain, but it is a very fitting end to these songs.
I urge everyone to listen to Vedette at MySpace or go to vedettemusic.com to experience the photographs, noise, and eerie decorum that inspires their musical visions. Their debut album is set to hit the shelves on November 3rd. It will be released on Stilll records. I strongly suggest that you pick one up on November 3rd.
