Venus Hum
The Colors in the Wheel
Nettwerk Records
It’s been a long time coming. Venus Hum’s last album arrived three years ago, and the time in between hasn’t been easy. Lead vocalist Annette developed a painful condition that nearly finished her career, while the other two members found themselves scattered across the United States. And now, after separation, illness, and shady side-projects, was it all worth the wait?

Almost. The Colors in the Wheel is a tightly constructed, elegant electro-pop album that’s comparable to anything the Nashville trio’s done. But everything’s just a bit too elegant, in fact – both “Genevieve’s Wheel” and “You Break Me Down” are far too dour, and “Birds and Fishes” is simply dull. But these are dips in the road, not potholes, and for the most part this is an engaging affair of catchy, disco-ready beats. The soulful “Pink Champagne,” the pulsating “Surgery in the Sky,” and the fantastic “Yes and No” stand out as the highlights, but Annette’s robo-sexual vocals can transform even the most limpid techno into something transcendent.

Although the music eventually becomes repetitive, the glimmers of pop perfection are powerful enough to make this album worth purchasing.
