Beck
Sea Change
Geffen/Interscope
|

Beck's two turntables and a microphone have been shelved (temporarily, I presume) in favor of an eccentric and visionary experimentation. Beck has always had his roots firmly grounded in old country and folk, of course there's still a compelling retro edge to his acoustic-based songs.

Unlike the party-hearty lyrics in the past, Sea Change is sculpted to a soft simplicity befitting the bruised tenderness of a broken heart. Some of the terms being thrown around about his album are "sad," introspective," and this being his "break-up album." Sea Change is much more than this though. This is the most honest and exposed Beck has ever been. There is no faux hip-hop stream of consciousness here, this man is an open wound. The work herein is beautiful and marks some of the most crafted and sophisticated lyrics he has ever written.
