Charles Thompson, aka Frank Black, has once again promptly released another album full of
3-minute tunes. While I think most of his albums are some of the best music released in
their years, my enthusiasm has gone up and down. I thoroughly enjoyed Frank Black's first
release, revelled in "Teenager of the Year" for several years, was personally disappointed with "Cult of Ray," got a few listens out of the
next few, got immense pleasure from his rendition of Tom Waits's "Black Rider" which he
recorded on "Black Letter Days," and since have had wavering interest. But something about
this new album caught my eye, maybe it was the album title that expressed some sort of
desperate honesty that enticed me to get this, or the cute lucky cat on the cover, or maybe it was new-found excitement over
the man because of all of the Pixies-reuniting buzz, whatever the case, I got it, and
I was somewhat pleased.

The songs on this album have driving guitar riffs along with saloon-style
piano chords to give them that classic Frank Black old-western, myterious, and rockin'
style. These songs are a bit more down to earth than his previous outer-space, underwater,
etc., themes, which is fine because he pulls it off. On this album he sings about leaving
a lover in the mountains, and returning to the coastline in one of the hightlights of this
called "Coastline," which compares with those off of his first 2 solo albums, along with
"Massie Centrate" which features his falsetto voice. Overall, this album is Ok, this is a nice listen until that day when maybe he and the gang pull out the big guns again, a day that will either be great if the foursome has some chemical reaction that can't help but make amazing music, or, go from their idolized state to just another come-back band.
