Gaunt
Sob Story
Thrill Jockey Records

I guess a lot of people considered Gaunt a pop-punk band but I’m inclined to disagree, most of the pop-punk bands I’ve ever heard were usually pretty corny with no musical direction, artistic statement, or aim. I mean their sound definitely fits into the sound category, but is it possible for a band to transcend a sound and become something else, and entirely more important that even they thought? Of course they can, but in our idiotic mass consumeristic society we rely on labels to tell us what we like, and we hardly ever defy what those labels tell us.

Track listing:

01 Fear
02 Now I Know Why
03 Wait Until
04 Lies
05 Each And Every Side Effect
06 Solution
07 Frustration
08 Lies
09 Oh Wait

Take for instance the word punk. The word and the images and ideas associated with punk are completely different now than they were, say, 25, hell, 15 years ago. Over and over we get bombarded with what a handful of producers decide a sound should sound like, and it seems like the sound changes about every 10 years or so. Being said, Gaunt seems to fit into the early 90’s version of punk (I’m really starting to get sick of the word frankly, and if you want my honest to goodness opinion it’s all just a re-working of the blues. Think about that for a minute, form your argument and e-mail it to me.) And as much as I hate to side these guys up next to other bands, I am instantly struck with the vocal similarities to Ben Weasel. But it pretty much stops there. The lyrics are much more mature and introspective than anything ole Weasel ever did. I hesitate to call the music itself furious, but angst is intrinsic in this music, as is the youthful attitude of the early 90’s scene, east coast to be more precise, but without being juvenile, geez, even now I’m sitting here in my old age being angry at my parents, but I think it’s not just because they wouldn’t let me stay out late, and I think this kinda sums up the attitude of the band, it’s a pretty nostalgic record and mood wise I feel a lot of longing in the actual sound. Longing for what? Who knows, but it’s definitely there. Not the whiney melancholy of lovey dovey emo, a better day? I don’t know, but I do know this record is a great example of good mature revival punk. The album is called Sob Story, and it’s absolutely woth it’s salt, and it’s on Thrill Jockey Records. Go buy it.
