Ok. This is probably my favorite band ever. I’m trying to remember the first time I saw them play, I know it was like their second show and I think it might have been at this little bar in downtown Memphis called the South End Saloon…anyways, I fell in love with them that night. Like serious I think my eyes were bugging and my jaw was dropped at what I’d heard that night. I had been a fan of the Reatards for a while and in conversation with Rich Crook, the drummer of both bands, he mentioned that Jay (Reatard) and he were in a new band called The Lost Sounds and I should check it out because it was pretty cool. Ok why not? The rest is history for me. I swear I’d go see ’em every time they were around and I was consistently impressed with the absolute ferocity and power of the music. I mean I’ve heard loud bands before, but something about these kids took it to a completely new level. The best part about all this is I’m still being impressed by them. Even thought they’ve modified their sound from the beginning and played around with the lineup their music has never ever suffered. I don’t know if it’s the pairing of Jay and Alicja or what, but I believe the lost sounds have to be one of the most excitingly prolific bands I’ve ever listened to. One of my big pet peeves with music is the transition from the first and second albums of a band. It is usually shit because the band tries to “expand” their sound. No, that’s dumb. Bands of the world please stop doing that. Follow the example of the Lost Sounds and BUILD on your music.

I always try to catch a show by these guys whenever I go home and I think the last time I saw them was in 2003 and they shook the walls baby. I noticed they had a new album and I didn’t have any money, so naturally I asked my sister to buy it for me after I had left town, well she did and I still haven’t seen it. It’s called Rat’s Brains and Microchips and I’m listening to it right now and I’m scared. Wanna know why I’m scared? I know there is no other band in the world right now doing this kind of music this well. And when you hear music that is so innovative it’s scary. It’s like the people of Memphis hearing Elvis Presley the first time and thinking “oh-shit-the-fuckin-world-is-falling-apart,” and it doesn’t hurt that the music itself is a haunting kind of music. When I describe to people what this band sounds like I usually say something to the effect of early Wire quirkiness mixed with your favorite horror movie soundtrack mixed with all the rage a maniac can muster. Put it on a record and you can have a good excuse for temporary insanity. My favorite song by these guys is Plastic Skin, and it’s not on Rats Brains And Microchips, but rather their second album, Blackwave; the stuff I’m digging most on this album is (besides all of it) the title track, it starts off with a string thing and builds into a crazy terror foreshadowing effect and then you get the most passionate vocals of Jay Reatard I think I’ve heard. fuck I’m listening to it again and I’m paralyzed. There isn’t really anything more I can say about this music. There aren’t many bands out there that can mix the sounds they do and still come off sounding cool and not campy. Honestly if you want to know the music that you’re gonna be hearing when the world ends…buy any of the music by the Lost Sounds.
