So I got my grubby little hands on Mouserocket’s first LP. It’s good. It’s really good. It's tons better than I thought it would be. Not that I thought it would be bad, but I didn’t expect so much from what I figured was just a side project for Alicja Trout and Co. Lots of really good catchy rock'n'roll with a powerpop tint and some of the neurotic sensibilities of Lost Sounds. The Lost Sounds definitely shine through. Or maybe it is just me looking for glimpses of Lost Sounds. I was thinking about the differences I hear on this record that sets it apart from maybe other bands that are doing the same kind of thing right now, and it seems like, to me anyways, that the intent of the band isn’t so much to be “it,” but rather it seems they’re pretty satisfied exploring their musical boundaries.

Usually a you can hear in the music when a band is out for cash and pussy and it ruins the music and I’m pretty certain I’m right about these guys because these songs are so laid back, but they still move, not like a stoned laid back either, but more of “we know what we’re doing and we’re happy how we’re doing it and if you don’t like it go away we don’t really need your input anyway.” And for that matter, I think that’s probably the most enticing part of the music for me, because if a band is really going to do anything with their music they need to be confident in how and what they play not letting ego get in the way. I don’t think there is a single instance on this record where anybody is really hot-dogging for attention; the songs are well recorded and mixed beautifully and the band functions like a band should function. The rhythm is there and don’t miss a beat with killer fills and vocals that will melt you. It’s seriously an impressive record. And before I forget, Mouse Rocket’s cover of “Alone Again, Or” by Love has to be the best cover of any song ever. It was a beautiful song to begin with, but with Alicja’s vocal qualities backed with how mellow MouseRocket can be, plus the replacement of the horns with a cello. Whoo. I’ve let everybody listen to that song and the consensus is all positive. And I didn’t doubt it would be, but you know. aside from “Alone Again, Or” the album is full of gems. I always dig on waste of breath, stomp around, I’m set on you, little black egg (yet another nugget), and black helicopters. Alicja’s distro, contaminated records will sell it to you as well as Empty Records. I think goner-records has it also. All of these distros are online so there should be no problems getting a hold of this record. So go buy it and have fun listening to it.
