I have a problem. His name is Richie Unterberger. He’s a reviewer for All Music Guide. He gave the Reigning Sound’s new album Too Much Guitar a shitty review. He starts off railing on the way the vocals were mixed saying “they’re mixed down low enough that you sometimes think you’re listening to a live recording…” Duh you moron, didn’t you ever listen to anything else this band has ever put out? Did you ever listen to The Compulsive Gamblers? Did you ever listen to The Oblivians? Man you got no perspective, and please don’t compare these guys to The Chocolate Watchband, yes they’re a good band, but Reigning Sound doesn’t do the whole psychedelic bit.

Hey Richie did you ever stop to think that these guys don’t want slick vocals? Maybe they’re going for that 60’s R+B sound. Did you ever think of that? These guys, I promise, aren’t trying to be rock stars:
BV: what would you want the lasting contribution of Greg Cartwright to be?
GO (Greg Cartwright aka Greg Oblivian): a couple of good records to find at a yard sale. (Starts laughing) you know, that’s about it.
They love goodtime music. They’re a bar band for goodness sake! C’mon people it isn’t about how loud the vocals are…it’s the rock’n’roll that counts.
I have to disagree with Unterberger at just about every point. In my opinion this has been the best release by the Sound yet. When I found out the Reigning Sound was putting out a new record I was extremely excited. I was certain I could count on Greg and the gang to give me what I wanted: good songwriting, good grooves, wicked delivery and a most wonderful mix. I was satisfied, and I think I was even more satisfied after having read some bad reviews on the album. Ignore those bad reviews…trust me. Start to finish this album takes the band to a new level. Using rock solid standards these guys blast off into rock'n'roll outer space leaving the rest of us behind to copy them. Seriously they’ve got some great sing-a-longs like “Your Love is a Fine Thing,” “(You Got Me) Hummin” and “I’ll Cry.” Another great thing about this band is the quality of covers. You can’t get covers like this unless you dig, and I’m think they had to dig pretty hard for some of this stuff. Oh man this is such a fun record.
I loved break up…break down, rocked my soul with Time Bomb High School, and I’m grooving to Too Much Guitar right now. Greg Cartwright has to be one of my favorite songwriters right now, and one of my favorite singers; and I think the dirtiness of the vocals is sooo cool. And yes it does sound like a live recording. That’s what it’s supposed to sound like. You can get this record from in the red records and I’ve also seen it on the Goner Records webpage. Gees I wish people would do some research before they shoot their mouths off. If anyone is interested in the interview I did with Greg Cartwright you can read it here. And start boycotting the reviews by All Music Guide. It’s pretty obvious most of the reviewers don’t have a clue what they’re talking about.
