Winterbrief
Tickets for a Peek

There is nothing worse than a bitter buffalo critic except a band that truly deserves a wretched review. Up until this point in my short span of writing reviews as a hobby and passion of mine, I’ve never wanted to immediately throw an album as far as possible from myself until now.

Track listing:

01 I think I saw it coming...
02 I want to be sexy (ex-rental bikini overkill mix)
03 Sore Losers, Sour Grapes
04 Young Bright Thing (afflicted mix by Guillaume Legare)
05 Days Outdoors I
06 Days Outdoors II
07 I want to be sexy (baxendale's dirrty words come all too easy mix)
08 The Glamour Wheels
09 Scratch the Itch (on the hip mix)
10 Best Offers
11 Art Loft Rebel (machine mix by the guy who invented fire)
12 We're Getting There
13 Days Outdoors (aisha's a2f remix)
14 Scratch the Itch
15 Tickets for a Peek (sansom cinema mix)

After emerging in 1998, Winterbrief supposedly have been working their way into the music scene with what they call a blend of pop music with punk energy, techno beats, new wave spunk, and edgy lyrics. I hear none of this. The Washington DC boy–girl duo formed the band after deciding that pop music just wasn’t fast enough for them. I will give them that, they have a quick tempo, but all it seems to produce is a migraine and clenching of the jaws. Maybe, just maybe if I was really high on drugs and or drunk, at a club, I could tolerate listening to this. Sometimes when I’m driving I crave upbeat, pulsating music to get me going but this is definitely not driving worthy music. It’s not workout worthy music or even pre-party music worthy. All it’s worthy of is target practice, maybe.

The album starts out with “I think I saw it coming,” this song is permeated with annoying electronic beats as it the rest of the tracks. One of the absolute worst tracks is “I want to be sexy” which consists of 3:34 seconds of “I want to be sexy, I want to be sexy, Christina Aguilera, Christine Aguilera,” I mean, what the fuck is this? Can this really be considered music and actually be recorded in a studio somewhere with someone actually monetarily backing them? It doesn’t seem fathomable to me. After those tracks they all seem to blend in together into an alien-like, electronic, menagerie of noise. I mean how many songs can you have letting everyone know you want to be sexy?

Maybe you have to be a true fan of electro clash to understand or appreciate this music, I don’t know. However I can’t even imagine if you were a fan of electro clash you would enjoy this. Okay, so to be kind I’ll insert some plugs for them now. In their newest release, Tickets for a Peek, Winterbrief explore what they consider to be their electronic and melodic side. The album includes tracks remixed by Baxendale, Ex-Rental, the Guy Who Invented Fire, Leg, and Addicted2Fiction.
